Once you do get them out, a regular O gauge pin won't fit without being soldered in place. All said and done, your life would be a lot easier if you bought the adapter section. I humbly stand(sitting at the computer typing this) corrected as to the question being asked. As I only use old Lionel O gauge tubular track(and starting to test super O track) I don't have info about fastrack. My advice: Stick to the tried and true if you are using older items. Or, try the MTH Milk car platform. It might work with fastrack ! It was made for use with older milk cars and Realtrax. This may solve your problem. Please let me know if that does the trick !
