I am replacing the wheels and wiring on a Lionel standard gauge 402 for a friend. A previous 402 I repaired had the 4 motor wires for each truck come up though the large chassis holes inboard of the truck pivots, so that the motor and its manual reversing switch could be removed in tact and be independently serviced. This seems logical to facilitate servicing these locos, and why else would the 402 need tandem reversing switches.

This current 402 has the 4 motor wires from each truck threaded up through the hollow truck pivot, so that they must be disconnected from the reversing switches in order to remove the motor. This recent unit appears to still have the original factory wires, but the wiring has been modified (new power jumper between the motors, and no leads to the headlights). While this routing hampers servicing the loco, it explains the large, hollow truck pivots and does reduce tension of the wires as the trucks pivot.

Can anyone tell me which wire routing is the correct Lionel factory original? Gary Q
