Any one w / info on P&LE boxcar ,Lionel
Posted by csxt30 on Thursday, May 19, 2005 5:31 PM
This is an NYC P&LE boxcar I wanted to get on e-bay, but looked at the Lionel site, Trainz auction, & the Lionel postwar site and can't find any info on it. The guy says it has a diecast metal body & sprung trucks. The # is 25002 and the # on the side of the car is20982. I just wonder if this is a collecter car or something that is gonna go for big bucks at the end. Thought I would try to find out more on this car. Thanks, John

I can't find a record of that model either. Lionel is selling a P&LE boxcar, but not with those numbers nor color:
http://www.lionel.com/Products/Findex.cfm

I would be very surprised if the body is metal. The picture on the auction, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4148&item=5975571833&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW#ebayphotohosting , looks very much like an ordinary red plastic car, with only the logos and lettering painted on.

John, isn't this another classic case of an eBay seller who doesn't know what they are talking about!? Die cast car? Yeah, right. I don't know where the seller got the 25002 number, unless it was on the box. The car is listed as having die-cast trucks in the catalog. No mention of body being plastic or die-cast, but given it's from a stater set, we can safely assume the car has a plastic body. I personally wouldn't buy anything from a seller who can't tell the difference between metal and plastic.

This car is from the brand new 2005 version of the upper level NYC Flyer set with Railsounds. More than likely the number on the car is a protoypical number. Lionel had started putting prototypical numbers the basic line of stater set cars. I notice this year in the 2005 catalog that the cars pictured on pages 72-73 now have numbers on the cars that correspond with their respective catalog numbers. Last year some cars had the catalog number on them while others had what appear to be prototypical numbers.

I think the only thing that would make this car potentially collectible is if it is only offered for one year and only in this set. But I noticed a few years ago, cars from the Chessie System Diesel set were also available as separate sale items as I saw them in boxes with printed numbers and info on the boxes... unless they came in normal Lionel boxes in the set and been broke up. But I do recall being at several shows and seeing cars from that set at several dealers, leading me to believe they may have been available to dealers. One dealer told me he did not break up sets.

Ultimately if you like the car, that's a good reason to buy it. As you probably know, it's hard to guarantee anything made currently will ever have collectible (increased financial) value. ON a related note I also notice "Greedale" sets seem to still be available.... hmmmm, thought they only made 500 of them, so why are they still available?

Thank You too, Brianel, for the reply. I was real excited at first, when I saw it. I didn't want it for collecter value, as I have a P& LE eng, & got to thinking, well first I wanted a caboose to go with it & Tom showed me MTH is coming out with one soon. Then I saw that boxcar & thought I'd make a whole P&LE train! I'm not gonna worry too much if I miss this one, as I believe down the road, there will be some more for sale. I was thinking this might be some rare car that would get way above my budget! Also, years ago, The P&LE used to get trains out of the harbor here, that I would work. Thanks so much for all your research & reply, sure do appreciate it ,oh, & always enjoy your postings, too! [:)] Thanks, John

Brianel beat me to it, but I'll add this. Last year's version of the NYC Flyer had the same two cars that are included in this year's add-on pacs. I wouldn't be surprised to see the P&LE car offered somehow outside of sets next year and beyond. Besides, if they're included in starter sets, there's going to be plenty floating around!

Jim, thanks, that's good news! I emailed that seller & asked him to see if it was a diecast metal w/sprung trucks, but so far he hasn't resplied. Also, what are the add on packs you mentioned? It doesn't seem to mention that at the Lionel site. Thanks again, John

John, I have two PLE gondolas that you might keep an eye out for. Both are similar to the postwar gons. One is brown, modern lionel (LLC, 1997) 16972, numbered 6462. The other is a black KMT that I put Lionel trucks on, numbered PLE-569028.

Hi Bob & thanks! Do you mean you have them on ebay or some other auction site ? Funny thing today, my boy told me I already had 1 P&LE car, & I said, where? Here we mounted a couple graders on a lionel flat car, # 9124 a while back, & I never even realised it said P&LE on it ! Thanks again, Bob, John

No, I'm not selling them, John. I just thought it would help you in assembling your P&LE train to know what's been made with that road name.

Bob, ok, I just read it wrong! I really didn't think you were a seller, after looking on the auctions for a couple hours, & didn't see anyone selling that might be you. Plus, I found one of those cars you mentioned at Charles Seagulls Chooch auctions in Erie Pa. Thanks a lot, & that other guy has another one on there already. So that makes 2 for him now! Thanks, John

John,

Lionel makes two tiers of O27 cars. The type that you can buy individually and in the lower priced Pennsylvania Flyer sets have plastic trucks and just seem to be a bit cheaper in feel. Kinda flimsy, but they work and run fine. The ones that are sold in sets like the NYC Flyer or other "premium sets" have die cast trucks. Since the car you're interested in comes from the NYC Flyer set, it has the die cast trucks. It does not have a die cast body or frame though.

Thanks Jim for that info!! I'm hoping one of the hobby shops I visit can get me one. I tried again to tell that guy it wasn't a diecast metal body. Bidders will think it's metal, then look out when they recieve it. I really don't mind, just want to build up a P&LE train. Thanks again, John
