Thanks, Chief. I had a hell of a time with the white decal stripes, and still have two more locos to do. Looks like a good reason to go to Kragen this weekend.

Great looking trains guys. tgovebaker, a hint from Tom P [Spankybird]. Use sutomotive pin striping for things like steps and side striping. Works great. This Dash 8 had no striping and I used Tom's suggestion.


You can use yellow, silver, white or any color they have at auto parts store. Thye come in several widths.

Still have another week to go before I can move into the new house so, in addition to packing up the house, I've been occupying my time by trying to learn custom painting, weathering, and detailing techniques. A few months ago I picked up a pair of Rio Grande SD-50s on eBay, both of which date to 1995 and lack the detail that contemporary motive power from Lionel, Atlas, etc., offers.



I used two different sets of Microscale decals -- a Rio Grande GP-40 set and an EMD SD-70 set, since I couldn't find exactly what I wanted. In addition, I used some plain white decal paper to add the safety striping to the steps.



Contrast the new look of #5512 with the original #5517, which I haven't gotten to yet.



I still need to paint the grabrails on the stairs white, and then get around to weathering the locos, but the decals do make a difference. Compare the two engines back to back:



The process only took a couple of hours. Next weekend I hope to get a chance to start on the new benchwork in the new house, so stay tuned!

This is a TMCC car. You never know when and what the giraffe is going to say.







Every year at our annual Christmas Party, these cars make the eyes open wide on the youngsters that run the trains.

Yesterday, Big Girl and I went on a local layout tour. We visited four homes, two with HO layouts, one with N, and one with S. It was the S scale layout that had one of the more unusual features. I have heard of this before, but never seen it in practice, until now.

The track plan took the train twice around the perimeter of the foundation, in the form of a folded figure 8, yielding a very long mainline. In order to do this, sacrifices had to be made.[swg]
