Doug, I would suggest denatuered alcohol instead of rubbing alcohol, it has much less water in it. Less chance of starting rust. But it will also dry out your hands.

I like Goo Gone for cleaning the track. Put it on, dry it off. Outside I use a swifter with Goo Gone.

Same here. Summer is when I probably spend the most time working on my trains.

Well, for me, I will be able to cut some plywood & homosote out in the garage this summer, as my basement is to cramped to do it in. It also gives me a chance to organize the basement by taking stuff to the garage to store that I don't need down there. I'm back & fourth like a yo-yo!! Then when it gets too hot in the garage, I can go to the air conditioned basement & build some more layout. Guess I'm in full swing year round, now! Thanks, John

I guess if I was going any slower I would be tearing my layout down. I hope I can turn it around in a couple of weeks. Last summer nothing got done. We'll see.

Sounds like good advice JON. My beer fridge happens to be next to the layout so................

Our train room activity has already slowed down as maintaining 5 acres takes about all my time and effort. Then once I get caught up I like to ride my bike and get rid of some of the winter weight, the problem is though at this time of the year I can barely stay ahead of the lawn and perennials, especially now that we've entered the monsoon season! Our biggest project will be to get the skirting on and just a few minor revisions to the layout. It can get extremely hot here in July/August so that's probably when we'll retreat to the train room.

There used to be an older famous black trumpet player who had nearly stopped playing. He decided to leave his case open in an area that he had to walk past every day and he felt bad if he didn't practice so he began playing every day. I try to do the same thing with my trumpet AND the train room, to get to the garage we have to go through the train room and I try and run trains at least a couple of times a week. It's all a mind game, once I start I have a great time--whether playing my trpt. or running the trains. It's good to have distractions[:)]

Thanks, Doug - I'll look for that instead.

I guess I slow down a bit too - now that I think about it - or rather work more in the evenings than during an icy cold Saturday. But I have grand plans to create an elevated loop using my soon-to-get-birthday-gift-to-myself of a K-Line battery powered train set. Have to clean the track though - I'm going to try rubbing alcohol saturating a cloth and plenty of elbow grease. I'm amazed at how much my ballasting messed it up. Or maybe it's just time - rubbing my finger down the rail and it comes up black - but it doesn't look dirty.

I too will take a break from now till about October on the work for the layout. Over the summer if there are some really rainy days I will probably run the trains for a while or do some of that "oiling" that needs to be done.

When it gets past mid-June, I tend to give the O guage layout work a rest until September or October. My layout is in an un-airconditioned out building. I don't do too much during the coldest weather either. I might work on my On30 switching layout some since it is inside, but yard work takes up a lot of "free" time.

Well, for me it means getting started. Stop traveling every week and try to get it done. [;)]

Summer Slow Down Layout Work

I know I am slowing down working on my indoor layout, but will now increase my activities working on the outdoor layout. (Plus, I need time to play golf and fish.)

How much do you slow down working on your layout during the next six or seven months??
