35" long, 3.25" wide. My track spacing for the #456 and #397 combo is 10.5" center-rail to center-rail.

FYI, the instructions (available on-line from Lionel) for the 14005 coal ramp specify 7.75" from the side of the coal ramp to the side of the adjacent track.

OK, this is great info. Thanks for that link and the part #, that makes things a whole bunch easier.

Now, my next question: to the doc or anyone else who has one of these: what is the footprint of this thing? Like how many inches long and how many wide, and how far away does the next track have to be to be able to slide the #397 coal loader underneath it for the coal to unload into? Thoughts? Ideas? Am I crazy?

Thanks again!

The part number for the #456 re-issue is 14005, and the catalog MSRP was $199.95.

BTW, the re-issue of the #397 coal loader, 14004, was issued at the same time with an MSRP of $179.95.

I have the PWC version from several years ago. It's a dead-ringer for the original right down to the controller. The only difference is a slight change in the design so that it works equally well with Post War and Modern Era operating hoppers. Apparently Modern Era hoppers did not work well with original Post War ramps because of differences in their coupler design.

By the way, I paid $145 for mine on eBay.

They released one a few years ago. It was in the the Classic Trains Vol. 1 catalog, year 2000. It was listed at $199.99. Good luck hunting for it, between all the dealers in CTT and on the internet you might track one down.

The Doctor Is In!!! I have the postwar coal ramp(have not set it up yet) And I am happy with it. It needs minor cosmetics and it will go on my pike when I move to the garage(mrs.Fu wants the basement space) I don't think Lionel has plans to reissue the ramp,
but you never know. There is not much that can go wrong with them. And they are easy to fix(as far as I know) My advise, if you are to take it, is watch E-Bay for one in good shape and buy it ! Lionel Coal Ramp re-release?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, April 7, 2005 9:48 PM
I know that Lionel has re-released several of it's postwar classics in recent years...things in the Lionel catalog that are marked with the "postwar" emblem that are clearly new versions of the old classics. Does anyone know if they have released a modern version of the #456 operating coal ramp? I'd like to have one of these, and I'm more of an operator than a collector, so I don't necessarily need the old, postwar one. In fact, I have a few modern accessories on my layout that seem to have better mechanics than the old ones, so I'd almost rather buy a modern version.

Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance...
