I think I'm gonna go with the 2340. This is what I think - I will run my GM Demo F3's with aluminum passenger set, New style Hudson with modern Lionel cars and 2340 with postwar operating cars and PWC stuff. These will be the main operators in my small collection - Thanks for the help!

Lionel post war was made in the USA and has character and history and appreciating value.

Modern stuff is made in far east somewhere.

Well, since you asked.

If I were buying, I would go for the 2340. My reason for this entirely is that I can't stand that awful single stripe paint scheme.

TMCC and Railsounds are awfully tempting, though.

Makes the decision tougher. I try to stick with the "buy only quality" mantra when adding to the collection. But with 3 kids, my budget seldom offers me the "collector quality" pieces. I'd say if the piece is still in very fine running condition, it should be considered.

Saving the money should also be considered. I held out for two years before i got my GG1 as I wanted a nice one for under $500. I finally got a beauty for $400 at an estate auction. Sold the box for $180 on ebay, net $220.



Tough call.

Here is the other side. Its not perfect but neither is my postwar collection. My collection is comprised of EX to VG stuff that my dad played with. The reason this decision is so important is that I have a very limited Lionel collection and I have designated each engine to a set of rolling stock. Also I'm getting married in Nov and money is going to be really tight pretty soon so I want something that is going to keep me happy for a while. I will run this engine with frieght first and hopefully upgrade to a passenger set. If I wasn't such a Lionel fanatic I would probably just get the Williams Congressional set for $460 and call it a day!

That 2340 in VG-E condition is Worth $700-$1000. Not sure what the condition is, but from what is in your photo, it looks at least VG. Not sure what you meant as "Paint loss", do you mean that chipped area along the bottom? That's not bad at all.

Not sure what the PWC goes for, but if sounds and TMCC are your preference, sounds like others have good things to say about it.

If they're both the same money, you could always buy the 2340, sell it at a profit to finance the PWC version. Even if you don't buy that one, there's plenty of the PWC versions around. No harm in making a profit if all is on the up and up.

I'm a collector and operator, so i run everything from my 1927 248 set to my LionMaster Hudson. Nothing is saved for the shelf. I'd love another vintage GG1 (I have a 2332), and they're a lot harder to find in nice condition.

Let us know your choice.

I just picked up a PWC 2360 and I really like it. It's a great runner with lots of pulling power. The paint is flawless and the sound is a faithful reproduction of the actual GG1's right down to the horn. It looks just like the postwar version except that there is no reverse lever sticking up through the roof. If you enjoy TMCC, then this GG1 is perfect. If you're more into the charm of Postwar Lionel, then you're probably better off finding a sharp 2340 or 2360. I like to run my trains, so I prefer the new PWC GG1.

I have the opportunity to purchase either a PWC 2360 GG1 or Postwar 2340 Tuscan in VG. Which would you get? Any thoughts? TMCC v. battery horn? Both are the same price$400 - the 2340 has some stripes left but a large paint loss on nose interior is like new as are the wheels. This is my first GG1 so I want to get the best deal - I'm vering towards the 2340 - but the 2360 is new! Hard to pick between new and old - who would think that this would ever be an issue with Lionel again!
