Hi, my father, Richard Battaglia (Dick back then) was partners with John Daniels, hence JAD, John AND Dick Railways. I remember when I was a kid we had them all over the house and we still have factory sealed sets that were never opened.
Anyway, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
This fall's Cal-Stewart show honored Dick Mayer of Richart Trains and also John Daniels, both of which had passed away in the last year.
While at the show, I met a modern standard gauge collector, who had written an article for the TCA Quarterly, July 2010, on modern standard gauge and he related to me that there were 4 partners in the endeavor, John Daniels, Jerry Brown, (Hench the J of JAD), I am guessing Richard Battaglia per the previous post represented the D, and I don't recall who the A in JAD represented. It was indicated that each of the partners recieved a number of the trains at the end of the production. While at the show I purchased an original boxed Hiawatha set that was shipped from Jerry Brown to the initial purchaser.
This modern era standard gauge expert indicated that the Hiawatha locomotive and tender were made around 1974 in a quantity of 250, with the cars being offered to the buyers of the engines the next year. The story I got is that only half of the buyers of the engines and tenders ended up purchasing the car sets, which were sold as a 3 car set with an optional diner. Due to an excess of cars, the other car bodies were sold either as red rail chief type cars or were sold in a M-10,000 city of Denver set.
