A little rod in the middle of the bell shaped piston hangs down. spring goes on it and is held by a keeper at the bottom. The rod that crosses under the piston pushes the piston and spring up and allows it to drop back down. It is pushed by the driver rods from what would be the steam cylinders. I am "running" from memory as I took mine apart two weeks ago and made sure the hole was open to allow the air to be pushed through. The parts "blow up" Tom referred you to should show it.

Be sure the hole in the smoke unit [where the piston goes in] is open. That is what makes the smoke puff out [air being forced through that hole].

2055, 2065, 665, 685 Smoke Unit Question
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 24, 2005 10:49 PM

Gentlemen,

I have some questions about the smoke unit in my postwar 2055 engine. When I disassembled the engine I found the smoke unit return spring hanging from the accuation lever. The tab / arm on the lever has a hole in it. The smoke unit piston has a hole in it. Is there supposed to be some sort of 'pin' through the lever, spring and top of the piston ? Or, put another way, what holds the spring between the lever and the piston ? Or ... does the spring go on TOP of the piston ?

Signed,

I'm confused
