Ran,

One way may be to investigate the web sites of some of the US and CA RR historical societies. I typed "railroad historical society" into Google and got over 100 hits.

Ran,

Also, don't just go by pictures. Old pictures scanned in and posted tend to fade. The historical societies Roy mentions may have some accurate color codings. I belonged to the Santa Fe Historical Society for some time and they have trouble finding color (or as you Canadians say "colour") matches for rolling stock early 20th century.

Also, prototype paint schemes sometimes differed depending on paint mix (what was avail at the time, and mistakes)

The fallen flag site http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ should keep you occupied for a few days.
