I stumbled across this old page because I happen to have one of these, and I'm looking for the parts list and diagrams.

 

As far as pictures, they're readily available in a variety of places.

That's what it is, Dave. I was asking if someone would post a picture of the side of it that I could get the markings off of the picture. That's the locomotive that pulled FDR's funeral train from Warm Springs, GA where he died to Hyde Park, NY. The Pullman car Eleanor rode in is in a museum about four miles from here. I am trying to get them interested in modular, and I figured that the Rooseveldt funeral train with their prized exhibit might be a good hook.

Interesting that the Southern went away from black locomotives. I don't think too many other roads did. Even SP's Sunset was an anomoly

Well, that getting old thing got me again. They say the memory is the second thing to go, but for the life of me, I can't remember what the first one is. I had some really boss Pullman cars scoped out that I was going to kit-bash for the Conneaut and the Ferdinand Magellan, and for the life of me (again) I can't find them. I thought they were Williams, and on the Williams web site, but if they were, Williams took them off because there is nothing over there to be found even vaguely resembling a Pullman passenger car.

On a related note, there is one of the manufacturers' web sites that offers steam locomotives in basic black without line markings. I can't find that one again either. Perhaps that is where I saw the Pullman set.

Well, you guys, don't ever get old; except it is way ahead of whatever is in second place. Although Ronald Reagan did use the Ferdinand Magellan in 1984, Southern 1401 pulled it and the Conneaut from Warm Springs, Georgia with the president's body after he died on April 11, 1945. Much more impressive history than RR campaigning. The famous picture of Truman reading about his defeat by Dewey was taken on the observation platform of the Magellan, and FDR used it to sneak out of DC to Miami so that Pan Am could take him to Africa for the famous "Casablanca Conference" in 1943. More than you ever wanted to know about American History.

Some of you guys are familiar with my recent exposure to modular modeling. what you don't know is that it doesn't exist within a thousand miles of here, at least not that I have found so far. So I have been out prospecting, and I found the Gold Coast Railroad Museum. Lots of real motivated train people, no modelers to speak of. Which brings me to the subject of thes post. The Gold Coast Museum is the home of the Ferdinand Magellan, FDR's private Pullman, now a national monument. Ronald Reagan used the car to campaign in 1984, and at least part of the way it was pulled by Southern 1401, a Pacific 4-6-2 that now lives at the National Train Museum-Smithsonian, I think. Here is a picture:



MTH has a Southern 4-6-2 (30-1355-1) that is very close. What I need is someone near the Beltway with a digital camera who will take a picture of the sides of this beast so I can tell what modifications need to be made to the paint scheme.

I figure that if I can get them to displaying their prime attraction as a modular model, maybe I can generate some interest in modular modeling. And if I can't, the Southern is part of my roots, and the kit-bash would not be lost.
