Thanks Bob! Although it is a fairly old VW diesel! ;b I think it got too much air in the lines after a filter change.

Here are a few pictures of two types of Marklin Stud contact track and the underside of a Marklin engine to show the slider pick up shoe. I hope this helps.

There was an article in one of the mags. on different types of track a few years back. If I remember correctly the stud rail uses "studs" in the ties instead of a third rail and instead of a pick up roller on the engine/cars there is a "shoe/slide" that spans the spacing between two studs. I also think someone on one of the forums had brought up trying this consept.

The studs are probably like the domed head carpet tacks and are electrically connected under the track.

Of course: It is not a sufficiently-old Volvo.

The studs are commonly called "pukos", for "Punkt-Kontakten", meaning "point contacts".

Marklin 3-rail HO track where the third rail is actually a series of studs which stick up from the tie strip.

I see references to this kind of track but don't know what it is.
