92 hatchattack,

Good to hear from you.
Do you have a name?[:D]

I know several people in the RR industry.
Good pay, good benifits, god retirement, & long and flexable hours.
If you do decide to try for a job there DO NOT tell them you are a model RR fan!
You won't get hired!

Good luck!

Sorry, my name is Joe.... Why dont they like to hire model RR fans?? Do you have any idea if they hire people with no experience????

what is considered good pay???? i dont plan to hop on board and become an engineer on the first day, but working around the yard wouldnt be bad....

id have do at least make what i make now, which is between 45-50K depending on OT...

To be honest i dont really know much about railroad operation.... but it has always facinated me since a was a kid, and my father would take me up to ride on trains, and his friends is an engineer in pensy

I'm Tom and siberianmo is my handle - pretty simple to figure it out. I love Siberian Husky dogs and I live in Missouri. There - the secret is out. I've been a member of this forum for about a year, although not very active. As of late I have found more time to enjoy the talk. I'm an HO railroader and a passenger rail advocate. I ride trains as often as time and money permits. Great way to spend my retired years. VIA Rail is my favorite of the passenger trains available in North America and I travel with them at least once a year. My HO pike is called "Can-Am" and features primarily passenger trains of VIA Rail, Amtrak and BC Rail. Some day I'll get around to figuring out how to post some pictures. Right now, if anyone wants to see the layout, send me an e-mail at siberianmo@yahoo.com and I'll get you access to my photo album with Yahoo.

Happy Railroading!

I'm Jim.

I live in Massachusetts with my wife and 3 kids.

The children's new train sets from Christmas got me back into the hobby after some 30 years away. I find myself enjoying the trains every bit, if not more than my kids do. I think the NYC Flyer with the RailSounds and the puffing smoke is an endearing set.

Although I know next to nothing about toy trains, I greatly enjoy learning and I have done plenty of that since joining this forum. To all those who have been kind enough to help me, the new guy, along, I extend my sincere thanks. I've already made some mistakes and there are sure to be more. Please bear with me!

Jim

You wont start out an engineer, you will be required to be on the payroll for a year as a conductor or a brakeman, then you can advance to engineer after all the tests if you desire, You will need to work all the lousy jobs as low man on the totum pole. Starting rate is only about 30k and you work virtually any hours as you would be 'on call' all the time!

May I suggest that just filling out your profile(s) will allow us to "get to know you" long after this thread fades into history...

Hi h92 hatchattack,
If you're looking for a Railroad job check the American Association of Railroads web site. http://www.aar.org/ They have job listings. The NS was interviewing for conductor trainees this past Saturday in my area of Cincinnati. The NS gave some example of the starting pay too! understand the CSX is hiring as well! This may not be listed on AAR as of yet. Best of luck to you!

I guess I'm a newbie too. I'm Dave from Cincinnati and I love anything that runs on rails. Even the old vertical subways that hide inside tall buildings. I've had Model railroading, Toy trains, and Rail fanning in my blood since year one. I'll collect anything Z to G, but focus my attention on 'O" Hi-rail/Semi scale and European Marklin HO. I have a HO Marklin shelf layout around my family room and an "O" semi-permenent Xmas tree layout at the far end. I'm plan to move in another year and plan to build a "O" Hi-rail layout in the basement. I am also a new member of the TCA and ETE (EuropeanTrainEnthusiasts). I love reading the posts here in the forum and have learned much from you folks. I thank you all!

Jim's suggestion is great. Fill out your profile. Then we can "recognize" you later.

The UP is hiring. From the conductors I know, these are tough jobs - you can start making pretty decent money (mid-30s here) but your time and life is at the mercy of the railroad.

came here to figure out why they train that sits in a box doesnt work...(correctly)

have a 2 year old that is SO Nutty for trains, at this point id be suprised if he doesnt get a RR job before he is 10????

he can live with out one of his many thomas trains in hand... its quite cute... he got a thomas train table (a fake one anyhow) for christmas and the minute he wakes up he is playing with it..

he does take brakes for food though...

I used to be into trains but never had the money for really nice equipment, so we will see how it goes for the boy...

living in the PACIFIC NW....

thats kind of a shame..... having a Baby to look out for really isnt going to let me take up a job like this i guess. Plus finatialy i can take a cut of 10K+ a year.

Its imposible to find a good paying job that u can actualy enjoy these days. [:(]

I wonder if u can still work on the railroad or be an engineer as a hobby these days? I know my dads friend became an engineer just as part time as a hobby. That would be cool maybe later in life, kinda fullfill a passion to work on the rails.

Engineer as a hobby? I'm not sure about that - unless you volunteer at a local RR museum - the IRM is always looking for people to help - not necessarily to run the trains but it is (eventually) possible. IMHO, it is challenging nee impossible to have a family / home life as you may traditionally know it (work a full day, go home, sleep uninterrupted at night, weekends off, etc.) and work for one of the Class 1s.
