Replacing Stanchions on Tank Cars

Hi,
I am replacing the stanchions on a Lionel 815 tank car. Doeas anyone have any tips on how to do this correctly?

I melted a PW plastic tank car when I used a dremel grinder to take off the molded-on part to replace with a wire.

I am told that a sharp chisel, mini planer or Xacto knive or razor would have been the way to do it.

As for attaching the wire, some do it w/super glue and others heat the wire and insert it into the plastic
