Hi, thanks very much! What type of grease do you use on the gears?
Also: I didn't get any transformer with this set-which one to buy? There is a hobby shop that sells Lionel close by here in Maryland.
I think this is a sharp looking train!

I have run the 8002 UP berk since it came out in 1980. Don't panic....it will be a fine runner. Your locomotive uses a "worm gear" attached to the motor shaft which drives a gear on the rear axle. Gears like this aren't meant to be turned by the wheels...there is alot of reduction and the gears usually bind up, especially in a new engine. You need to run it from the motor check the gears. I would bet it will run smoothly in both directions when you run it under power. Now the bad news...you will want to open that engine up even if it is running smoothly, the 1980 grease has long since dried up. It should be cleaned out and new grease applied to the gears inside the loco. Berkshires only have 3 screws holding the frame. 1st remove the front and rear trucks and then the side rods. Next there are 2 phillips screws in the rear and 1 in the front..right in that hole in the middle. Now comes the tricky part..the smoke ears clip under the pilot and must be gently pried off the pilot to release the frame from the body. With the body off you will see where the motor and gears need to be greased. Take your time and it is not that difficult. Good luck.

Well I am back again-- I just bought this 8002 Berkshire at E-bay new in box--
It really looks new and I think it is- Problem is when you turn the wheels by hand
they turn freely in one direction but locks up going the other direction! I oiled all
the wheels and pivot points but to no avail- Book says to remove cab and oil the motor- I can see the motor but can't figure out how to get the cab off--All I see
are two screws that hold the rear truck but that don't do any thing- tried moving the E-switch that does nothing.. no directions as to how to remove cab and I don't want to break anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
