Help finding a ZW Exploded View for Parts
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, February 1, 2005 4:13 PM
I'm looking for an exploded (expanded) view of the new Lionel ZW Transformer. My right handle was not operating correctly and my forcing the handle caused a flat piece of plastic that allows the small gears to mount to the metal base is broken. I'm not a dealer and my local dealer, Trains Place Plus in Worcester, MA is not reputable. (He had a warped roof from one of my trains for over two years and then gave it away to someone... of course he blamed Lionel.)
I've called Lionel and to be honest their customer support is marginal. They were not helpful finding information on their site and sent me to tech support. They told me to go to my local dealer. Based on past experience that was not an option.

Does anyone know where I can find a parts diagram so I can order the part from Lionel dealer or parts store or maybe Lionel - if they sell me the part? Greenberg publishes a book but the year stops at 1986. I purchased the ZW in y 98-99.

Any help is appreciated.

Mike:
I checked the Lionel web site and found this: www.lionel.com/products/productnavigator/InstructionManuals/72-2982-250.pdf
But I doubt if it has all the information you need.

The problem that you describe is a common one with the early versions of the new ZW. The ones affected are those bearing the Postwar Celebration Series label and included two 135 watt powerhouse. The newer non-PWC version that has the 180 watt PHs comes with that piece made of metal from the factory.

Although I haven't had an occasion to do so, I have always understood that Lionel will readily send you the metal replacement part if you call them and explain the situation. It might be worth it to call them again, as you could have caught someone who was not familar with the problem, or was just having a bad day and didn't feel like dealing with it. My recent past experience with Lionel technical support has been mostlyexcellent, and most others have reported the same thing.

Good to have you on the forum! I too have had the same problem and sent mine to my local dealer. They are getting the metal parts that hold the rhostats(controlers) on the ZW. Check with your dealer but first call Lionel and have them send you the brackets. Make sure that you ask for the both sides. Any reputable LIONEL service dealer should be able to fix it.
