An L-shaped layout using two tables, 4 x 8 and 4 x 10 coverred in 2" foam. I'll add another 4 x 8 table to vertical in the future. Hoped it would be larger, but had to leave room for ping-pong table, drum set, dance studio, etc.



I'll add construction photos in seprate post, for now just diagrams as requested?

I have posted this a number of times here in the past, so many have seen it.

Colin, the room is 38' x 46', and this is only one of two levels. Actually the plan is undergoing some minor revisions, but the jist is the same.



The helix is in the upper right corner of the plan.



This photo was taken earlier today, standing in the aisle near the top of the plan, at the left, looking back toward the helix.

Like eZak, I don't yet have a diagram. I'll do one in photoshop today if I get time or maybe Monday.

But in photo #2, you can see most of the track I have down except for a 38 inch long crossover in the distance and a few feet on the left side.

About half the track is down. It's a point-to-point layout.

PS forgot to mention that the 3rd rail is a 14-gau wire I'll be laying down over the weekend. The last photo on the site shows a turnout with the wire. The wire is nearly invisible from a few feet away and since it is copper it blends in w/ties and ballast and carries current more efficiently than a rail. So, it's 2 rail track with a wire instead of a 3rd rail.

Here is the layout that I am currently putting together on paper at this point. It will eventually be 25x25 but will be built in stages to spread out the cost over a few months. I'm hoping to get roughly the left side benchwork done in the next week or two.

Of course, everything looks good on paper. This currently is just a concept but I hope to start building my benchwork later this month. Overall the layout is 8'x12' (with a corner cut out to make room for my furnace). My objectives are few: create a small switch yard; have a couple big circular runs; be able to turn trains around in either direction; run a trolley and perhaps have a 2 or 3-bay engine house. Maybe later this spring I'll have some pictures of what it really turns out to be.

Don't worry Pat, I will be having open houses as soon as I get some trains running, later this year. Everyone is invited. I have set a goal to be on the fall layout tour for the local NMRA.

Thanks Tim for the offer!! REALLY!!! I'd appreciate it. Currently (don't laugh) my sketch is assuming Lionel fastrack because I have a good lot of it already. You can see (sort of) from my diagram that the curves on the left side are (from left to right) O60, O48 and O36. On the right its O36 and O72. The trolley line in the center is O27. All switches are O36 except for the very top ones connecting the outer and next-inner loop...I thought these might be O72 switches.

Of course, I'm open to anything. Thanks again! Feel free to email me if you have any questions. I can also send a better scan of my sketch.

Sorry Sean, I realized when i went to draw up Matt's design that I do not have the FastTrack library. I kind of hacked his together using different makers track just for refeerence, but I would not build anything from it.

If you want, email me the file and if I get the library I'll see what I can do.

Is there a reason you don't want to use Atlas? I think it's pretty nice hi-rail track.

Hi Matt,

I think a said it before, I don't have the new FastTrack libraries, but I've kind of patched something together using various manufacturers track of similar size and radius. This will give you an idea of how your plan is working.




A few things to consider;

I think somewhere on the CTT site there is an old article about layout planning which gives some hints to switch placements and such. Basically it discourages face to face placement of switched for crossover purposes. Not that these won't work, but an s curve will cause problems eventually, either with length of train or speed. Placing switches on curves works better, you'll see I've done that in one instance on your design.
With the smaller curves in your design, you'll want to limit your engines to the smaller O scale versions, certainly no "scale" offerings. That's what I run as the big stuff just doesn't look right if you don't have 30' of space.
Also, leave room for access hatches if you'll be having switches in the middle of the layout.

You'll notice that the CAD design differs quite a bit from your sketch. I think the main feel is there, with your reverse loops, yards and engine house section. But use this as reference. I wouldn't recommend building from it.

I'll let you know if I get the FastTrack updates.

Spankybird could you give some more details on your 5x8 layout ? Someone asked if it was O-27, I never saw the answer. Also is that a crossover being used or are you using trestles ?

Sorry Rozy, I didn’t see Snell50 posting (but he did e-mail about it, which I answered him).

Both layouts are 027 track. The 5 x 8 has 27” dia track on the corners and 042” dia on the outside loop on the corners.

The large layout has a 45 deg crossover and also a crossover from above.
