Sixty years ago today, Lionel was awarded United States patent #3,074,647 for Super "O" track.

What I will never figure out, though, is why Lionel did not just put a pin in every rail end that had a "ball" under it and leave empty every rail end that has a "socket" under it. This would preclude ever having to change pins out... I have modified all of my Super O like this as I clean/refurb each piece.

It feels very fitting to me that one of my finds at the Springfield MA show was a decent handful of Super O center rail joiners (I counted em up... 34 in total). The main reason I never really got all that busy making my small collection of Super O track usable, was I didn't have enough joiners. Not anymore! Very excited to finally be able to put it to use.

1963 is six years after Super-O's introduction.  Any idea what the patent covered?
