The W&A's Sparky emerges out of Carothers tunnel, crosses the C&O canal, and under Bridge 6 of the Western Maryland Railway. That's the west portal of 3,118 foot long PawPaw Tunnel in the background. Looks like the MofW team needs to cut back some of the wisteria clinging to the metal bridge railing, but maybe they'll wait until the blossoms are gone...
Looking good Fife!
Same me, different spelling!
fife,
You continue to inspire. I just picked up another Marx Wm Crooks. Its going to head up a Modern Marx beer train. Pictures to follow.

Northwoods Flyer I just picked up another Marx Wm Crooks.
No kidding! I've still got mine from when I was a boy of about six or seven! It came out the Marx "Tales Of Wells Fargo" playset. Everything in the playset's long gone but I've still got the engine and the cars. Still runs and smokes too, even the headlight still works.
Flintlock,
How Lucky you are to have your childhood engine, and still in running condition.
When my Wm Crooks arrives it will join this train already in the collection.
I'm going to have to ask fife to help me start naming my old timers.
Enjoying the World's Greatest Hobby
Thanks folks. And yes, a WM Crooks is on my wants list. Either one in pristine condition, or a cosmetic basket case, as long as it is a good runner.
As for naming the fleet, that has more of a personal connotation.
Sparky was the first Lionel General I picked up, at YORK. The vendor told me it probably hadn't been run in 20 years. When I got home, I placed the 1862 on the track, and true to its name, it put on a sparkler show as it came back to life. The name stuck.
Ginger & Mary Ann are the Civil War pair that the LCCA put out. Probably my only impulse buy, and Brent was with me at YORK when I found them. If I was stranded on an island, they would be my choice of engines to be marooned with.
Darlene the LCCA Halloween engine, was my grandmother's name, and she bought me the set.
Millie is the AF 4-4-0, named after Mom, and it was a Christmas present from her.
Dora Lee is the USMRR Medal of Honor engine. I'm a Dolly P fan.
Miss Mona is the Williams 10-wheeler. Did I mention I'm a Dolly fan...?
As always great pics all.
Wm. Crooks engines are out there, they do show up at train shows, at least in this area. I've never seen one in pristine condition though, these were toys after all and even though the motors are darn near bulletproof I can't say as much for the markings. Most have the "Wm Crooks" on the engine and "C. M. & St. Paul" on the tender worn off. That was the case with mine so I did a repaint on it and made a C.R.R. of N.J. engine out of it. Mine has a two-position e-unit that's stuck in "forward," but I don't mind, it could be stuck in reverse! Maybe one day I'll do a tear-down on it but I'm in no rush, I only run it occasionally.
I seem to remember that Kevin has one I think.
A little late to the add, but I'm in the middle of construction. Here is my lionel 6-13100 ( 1988 remake of 390E) pulling prewar 1766, 1767, & 1768 Passenger cars and a 514R ventilated Refrigerator car. On the inside track is my prewar 390E pulling two 511 staked flatcars missing there wood load.
Making progress, smokey1.
