GLENDALE, California (CNN) -- A commuter train derailment killed at least three people Wednesday when two Metrolink trains apparently sideswiped each other in a Los Angeles suburb, Los Angeles fire officials said.

The number of passengers and how many were injured in the derailment in Glendale, California, is not yet known.

Videotape shows train cars on their sides with shattered windows and the metal sheeting peeled backward and crushed inward.

Firefighters are struggling to reach passengers believed to be trapped, placing ladders against the debris to get into the cars.

There is no official information on how many people may still be inside.

That sucks. Looks like the Coaster cars I ride every day on VRE. passengers in the end sections of those 2 cars likely didn't fare too well

I sometimes think of this on Metra and we're speeding alongside another inbound train - and I can peer right into the pushing F40's cab from the upper level...

By the way, they say one Metrolink train hit a car at a crossing, ran into another Metrolink train and then ran into a parked UP freight. Note the overturned engine. I wonder who left the car at the crossing that started all this.

In Cleveland, we have had two days of Simi Truck overturing on the interstates and one was on an overpass and fell off the brigde to the road below.

Remember when, not to long ago, homeland security was say our railways was a tirget. Are they[?]

SPANKYBIRD,
Makes you want to think? Maybe a test for something bigger?

Here in Jersey the Amtrak Acela lines have no crossings, but most of the NJ Transit lines don't.

I live here in LA so we've had endless press coferences and stuff all day. What they're saying is, the guy drove onto the tracks to commit suicide and jumped out of the car at the last minute. The southbound Metrolink hit the car and derailed (the southbound trains have the locomotive in the back, pushing), hitting the UP locomotive and knocking it down into a Costco parking lot. The the cars jacknife over onto the northbound tracks and sideswiped a northbound Metrolink train. Nonbody can seem to agree if there's 10 dead or 12.

It's weird watching this. I' live just a few miles from all this, I've ridden that route, and I shop at that Costco all the time.

All this over a guy who wanted to end it.

Too bad he failed.

Will be praying over the survivors and 11 that died.
