I use a type K with my no. 8.  I got it years ago for less than 20 bucks on ebay if I remember correctly.  I also use a 95 rheostat to get more speed options.

Here's some information on the Type V, not as much as I'd like but maybe it'll help.

Here's the whole Tandem Associates transformer section:

The train is running. Used a Lionel Trainmaster Type - KW transformer and it worked OK. At times the train struggled on the curbs. Swithched to the original Transformer a Lionel Type T train ran much better. The reason I believe is KW is only 20 Volts. The T is 24volts. Are there any used 24 volt Transformers out there. I've seen a Type V that is 25 volt but know nothing about them. Does anyone?
