Got it fixed and working great. The problem was with the whistle switch its self. Found some fragments that were causing a short when used. Had to put on the magnifying glasses to see it.
Are you using a stud rectifier? I've always used a 1N1184R or similar device. The frame of the bracket is typically the anode of the rectifier but on some Lionel transformers they reverse the whistle polarity. I don't think reverse polarity makes a difference with postwar trains. Perhaps the mechanical connection between the mounting bracket and the transformer is corroded or a wire came loose? Just guessing here. Let us know how you make out.
Looking to replace the rectifier disk in a SW whistle control that is no longer working. I have done this in others but this one is being a bit of a challenge. I have tried 2 differant diodes that I normally use. They are the most common ones everyone uses. however heres the problem that I have not run into before. If I use the original mounting bracket in the system I get no power loss but I also get no whistle. Bypass the bracket I get a whistle but my voltage drops from 19 down to 7-9volt and the train will come to just about a complete stop. I have not come across this problem before. I have tried various diodes and ways to hook the system up and get the same result. Even using multible engines and tender that I know function as they should.
I would greatly appreciate some assistance on this problem.
