You know, if your local hobby shop sells Estes model rockets you should modify the nacelles to accept model rocket motors!  THEN set up an outdoor track and let 'er rip!

Not if you could add roller coaster style rollers to lock the wheels to the track and have somewhere you could set up a perfectly straight and level mile long tangent!  WhistlingLaugh

Y'all know, the NYC development department actually built something like that.  Plopped a pair of jet engines on a Budd RDC, added some rudimentary streamlining and proceeded to set a rail speed record. Later, the jet engines ended up on a modified flat car as an experiment in snow removal from the tracks.

Lionel built a model of it a number of years back.  I've got one.  I also think Lionel did the snow removal flat car one year, too.
