Simply put, those are Lionel wheel sets on equipment that were meant to run on Lionel tubular track and switches.

I enjoyed the video for the straight forward steps to repairing the F3.

I just ran my 1953 lionel set with 2046 loco with a few extra cars backwards.

8 cars total on O27 track.  And not my best track quality.

No problems running for 5 minutes.

All Lionel PW from the 50s.  Good compatibity.  But I had no turnouts to deal with, just an oval track.

Right.  The middle of the trimmed skirt swings in over the switch machine, which it just barely clears.

OK, thanks Bob, so that way they can clear the O27 turnout switches I suppose.

I assume if the cars never have to go through a turnout they would run on O27 track and curves?

Some of my curves do have radii greater than the standard 12.5 inches, but many do not.  I trim the cars' skirts to the same height as they are over the trucks.

It used to be possible to search from the forum, but that hasn't worked for me for a long time.  I find that Google outside of the forum works pretty well at finding forum posts that are inside the forum.

Bob,

I thought the 2500 series was only for O gauge track.

How do you get them to run on O27?  Larger radius track than 27?  Any modifications to the cars themselves?

Bob

I run longer trains (on my O27 layout) by putting the locomotive in the middle of the train.  For example, I have a 2383T-2243C-2243C-2383P ABBA set (pulling 8 2500-type cars).  The actual locomotive is the fourth unit, pushing 3 dummies, with no trouble at all.

Check out this video--about half way through, he runs about 6 car train in reverse at good clip and has no trouble with derailments.   My trains wont do that. Whats the secret?
