Thank you very much.  The study you included was very insteresting and helpful.  It turns out mine is the 1936 version casting.

Recently aquired 1688e locomotive.  It only has number plate on one side has the slots for plate, other side has now slots  cut into for plate.  Was this something  done originally then changed to 2 sides, or was this a mistake that slipped through.
