Repair a Lionel Type K Transformer
Posted by Stevengl on Monday, September 6, 2021 10:26 PM

I purchased a "working" Lionel Type K transformer... but I don't have the nerve to plug this in and test it myself LOL. I bought it with intentions of essentially having it totally gutted and restored (as needed) so I can use this as my primary transformer to run my standard gauge trains. Something about a period transformer running my trains on original Lionel track just makes me smile.

Now for the question... does anyone know someone I can send this dinosaur to to have it rebuilt? I appreciate any suggestions! I'm in the NYC area so the closer the better for shipping costs, but I'd send it anywhere!

There's these folks in Mountain Lakes NJ.  If you're in the NYC area they might be a good bet.

They're Lionel specialists, pre-war, post-war, and current production.  I don't know if they do transformer rebuilds but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Another pre-war and post-war specialist in NJ is:

Farther afield, there's these folks.

I don't know if the last two rebuild transformers either, again, you'd have to ask.

Hope this helps!
