JUBILEE A-LA-CARTE LOCOMOTIVES
57 WORDS

BEWARE BACKWARDS ANSWERS

  1. 1975 was a good year for (SEPARATE) sale locomotives.  Fourteen (POWERED) and twelve (DUMMY) diesels, four (STEAM) locos and one (ELECTRIC); the No. 8551 “(LITTLE - JOE)” Pennsy, were illustrated.
  2. Sold only as the “(TRIPLE) diesel” set, the A-B-A No. 6-8552, 54, 53 (SOUTHERN) Pacific (ALCO) freight units wore (DAYLIGHT) colors, however (PASSENGER) cars took another (SEVEN) years to be cataloged.
  3. “Inspired by the GM SW1”, the 6-8556 (CHESSIE) switcher and the No. 6-8560 U36B dummy were the color queens in their “striking (TRITONE) color schemes.”
  4. “Bright and (BOLD)” were the adjectives enlisted by the copywriter when describing the No. 6-8550 (JERSEY) Central GP-9, while the No,. 6-8454 (RIO - GRANDE) was described as a “(BOLDLY) marked (WORKHORSE).”
  5. The beautiful No. 6-8363 (BALTIMORE) and Ohio F3 A unit was described as a “(HUGE), heavy diesel” that “boasts (COLORFUL) markings.”  Just as pretty to some, the No. 6-8466 (AMTRAK) “beauty weighs nearly (FOUR) pounds” and has “(AUTHENTIC) markings” was about all the flowers the writer would say about these two classics.
  6. But wait!  There’s more!  Down at the bottom of the page in fine type were (FIVE) more powered and three more dummy locos not (ILLUSTRATED) but “Also (AVAILABLE).”  They bring us up to a total of (THIRTY - NINE) locos available a-la-carte in 1975!
  7. “The (TOP) of the Lionel (LINE)” for Lionel’s 75th (ANNIVERSARY) year was the 19 ½ inch long No. 6-8206 (DIE - CAST) New York Central (HUDSON) equipped with the Mighty (SOUND - OF - STEAM)”, rimless (BALDWIN) disc drivers, “and (WHISTLE), working (SMOKE), headlight and (REMOTE) - (CONTROL) forward - (NEUTRAL) - reverse.”
  8. Almost as long at 18 ½ inches was the No. 6-8304 Die-cast (ROCK) Island “Steam and (TENDER)”, another (ATLANTIC) using a shell mold with a (POSTWAR) heritage.
  9. The third separate sale steamer had a lineage even older than the 8304.  The No. 6-8506 die-cast (PENNSYLVANIA) 0-4-0 switcher was based on the No. 1656 of 1948, which, in turn, was a (MODIFICATION) of the (PREWAR) No. 201.
  10. The final loco, the 6-8209, was introduced in 1972 as the No. 8200 “Authentic (DOSCKSIDE) Switcher,” the (MOTIVE) power for set No. 6-1280, the (KICKAPOO) Valley & (NORTHERN).
  11. Did I say final?  Wait!  There’s one more!  Can’t forget the No. 6-1776 (SPIRIT - OF SEVENTY - SIX) U36B, a “duplication of the actual (SEABOARD)” diesel.
  12. Counting (LOCOMOTIVES) included in the sixteen (STARTER) sets offered in 1975, plus the (FORTY) a-la-carte units, that brings us to a grand total of (FIFTY - SEVEN) powered and dummy locos (CATALOGED) for Lionel’s diamond (JUBILEE).  If you were counting your way through the catalog, the extra unit came with set No. 6-1489, led by the Nos. 8020-8021 (SANTA - FE) FA-FB duo.
