LIONEL'S DIAMOND JUBILEE SETS
57 WORDS

BEWARE BACKWARDS ANSWERS

  1. In 1969 it looked like Lionel would not be around to celebrate the company’s 75th (ANNIVERSARY) in 1975.  But fate and (GENERAL - MILLS) conspired with a “group of (DEDICATED) Lionel employees determined to bring back the train line” to save the iconic brand.
  2. Leading off (LIONEL ‘ S), or, should we say (FUNDIMENSIONS’) offerings in the 24 page catalog was set No. 6-1585, the 75th Anniversary (SPECIAL).
  3. Pulled by the No. 7500 “big U36B (DIESEL) engine,” the 9-(UNIT) set included three 9700 (BOXCARS), three (REEFERS), and a lighted (CABOOSE).”  The ninth unit, while pictured but not mentioned in the text, was the No. 7504 (COVERED) quad (HOPPER).
  4. Turning the page revealed the first four of the fifteen (STARTER) sets which, unlike the No. 6-1585, came with (TRACK) and (TRANSFORMER).  Or DC (POWER - PACK) in the case of the bottom end No. 6-1380.
  5. Decorated for U. S. (STEEL), the little No. 8350 (SWITCHER) used a body style similar to the (POSTWAR) No. 41 United States (ARMY) locomotive of 1955.  But the similarities to that landmark (MOTORIZED - UNIT) end there.
  6. An “(AS - SEEN - ON - TV)” logo drew attention to the No. 6-1581 (THUNDERBALL) Freight.  The odd little 2-4-0 loco pulled a small (STREAMLINED) tender equipped with Lionel’s (SOUND - OF - STEAM) and four basic cars.
  7. Not (ILLUSTRATED) but described in very basic terms on these two pages were the Nos. 6-1383 (SANTA - FE) Freight, a “5-Unit set pulled by Santa Fe (ALCO) A”, and the 6-1463 (COLA) Train, a “5-Unit set pulled by switcher” (SIC).
  8. The sets improved considerably with a turn of the page.  Perhaps the best of them were the Nos. 6-1489 Santa Fe (DOUBLE) Diesel and the 6-1586 (CHESAPEAKE) Flyer.
  9. The 1489’s motive power was the A-B pair of 8020 - 8021 Alco FA’s in the classic red and silver (WARBONNET) paint scheme.  Among the set’s six cars was the No. 9042 Ford - (AUTOLITE) boxcar incorrectly called a “reefer car” in the set’s description.
  10. The No. 6-1586 employed a (MIGHTY) Sound of Steam equipped 4-4-2 (ATLANTIC) that has “all the (SOUND) of (RAILROADING)” synchronized with it’s (SMOKE) unit.
  11. The No. 9125 two-(TIER) auto (CARRIER) included with four other freight cars in set 1586 was tempting, but turning the page revealed a car that could carry more (TOY) (AUTOMOBILES).
  12. Both the No. 6-1560 (NORTH) American (EXPRESS) and the No. 6-1584 N&W (SPIRIT) of America sets included the No. 9129 (THREE)-tier auto carrier lettered for N&W and (TRAILER) Train.
  13. Both sets featured (PORTHOLE) cabooses that matched their locomotives.  The Nos. 8564/9168 (UNION - PACIFIC) and 8559/9170 (NORFOLK) & (WESTERN) respectively.
  14. The only (PASSENGER) set illustrated in 1975 (the No. 6-1487 (BROADWAY) Limited was not pictured) was the No. 6-1587 (CAPITAL) Limited.  Pulled by a 4-4-2 loco, “the beautiful (B - AND - O) passenger car (TRAIN) set” featured the new small (HEAVYWEIGHT) cars MPC introduced in 1973.
