OF FRONTIERSMEN, PIONEERS AND GENERALS 2
62 WORDS

BEWARE BACKWARDS ANSWERS

  1. American (FLYER) made the frontiersman, (MARX) honored railroad pioneer William (CROOKS) and Lionel modeled the General.  We also looked at the (THOMAS) Industries 4-4-0 in part one.  Now it’s time to (SALUTE) Lionel’s (AMERICAN) type steamers.
  2. It was probably around the time the (DISNEY) movie starring (FESS) Parker about the (ANDREWS) raid during the American (CIVIL - WAR) was released in 1956 that decision makers at Lionel decided to make a model of the starring (LOCOMOTIVE).
  3. Of course movies, radio dramas and TV shows featuring tales about “(WILD) West” cowboys, outlaws, lawmen and (NATIVE) Americans were also popular in the 1950’s.  But the 100th (ANNIVERSARY) of the war between the (STATES) was fast approaching and the (LOUISVILLE) & Nashville Railroad was working hard on returning the real (GENERAL) which had been on display at (CHATTANOOGA) Union Station since 1891 and a yellow combine back on the rails for a system wide tour.
  4. Dominating the cover of the (ADVANCE) catalog for 1959, the loco’s role was downgraded a bit for the (CONSUMER) catalog cover illustration.  However, a slightly less colorful version of what’s arguably the better painting appeared on the 36 page (ACCESSORY) catalog that year.  Perhaps Lionel’s leaders got a look at Flyer’s catalog (COVER) and decided the illustrations were too similar.
  5. While the artwork used by both (GILBERT) and Marx most closely resemble what we’ve come to think of as the “(OLD - WEST)”, it’s worth noting that one (HUNDRED) years prior to the big 3 manufacturing their models in 1959 that “the west” meant any land that wasn’t one of the 13 original states and was (EAST) of the (MISSISSIPPI) river.  At least, it seems, as far as the (UNION) Army was concerned.
  6. First in Lionel’s catalog was O-27 set No. 1612.  Led by the No. 1862 loco with (OPERATING) headlight, (TWO - POSITION) E-unit and (GREEN) 1862T tender, the economy version pulled the unlighted (YELLOW) Nos. 1865 (PASSENGER) and 1866 (MAIL)-baggage cars in “The General ‘(OLD - TIMER)’ Outfit”.
  7. The next step up was the No. 1800 General (FRONTIER) (GIFT) Pack with an extra car; the No. 1877 flatcar with (HORSES).  The car was (UNPAINTED) brown plastic and the fencing pieces were (MAROON) while the (PLASTICVILLE) steeds were two each black, (TAN) and white.
  8. Shift over to the (SEARS) Wishbook where you’ll discover set No. 79N09666.  Similar to the No. 1800, what sets this outfit apart are the O-27 (TRACK) and (TRANSFORMER) not included with the 1800.  Even better, this exclusive promotional set also included the No. 963 Frontier Set with a (LOG - CABIN), windmill, fences, (COWS) and a pump.
  9. Back to Lionel, the deluxe cataloged (OUTFIT) was the (SUPER - O) No. 2528WS retailing for $49.95 ($454.66 in 2021 dollars, or 810%!).  The No. 1872 General loco, resplendent in red, (GRAY) & gold, was equipped with Lionel’s revolutionary (MAGNETRACTION), red banding on the (DOMES), operating headlight, (THREE - POSITION) E-unit, (SMOKE) and gold (BOILER) bands.
  10. It’s (TENDER) was the standard 1872T in green with gold (HEAT - STAMPED) W. & A. R. R. lettering and a (RUBBER) fuel load.
  11. Early locos were likely to come with their (HEADLIGHT) housing painted the same (TILE) red as the cab, (PILOT) and wheels but most are black.  Also, some locos had their balloon (STACKS) painted (BLACK).
