CLUB CARS PART 1
60 WORDS

BEWARE BACKWARDS ANSWERS

OOOPS!  MISTAKE IN QUESTION 3

THAT'S COWEN, NOT COWER!

  1. No, not that kind of club!  I’m talking about “the (LEADER) of the club that’s made for you and me, (M - I - C) - (K - E - Y) - (M - O - U - S - E)!”
  2. It all started on Saturday afternoons when hundreds of Mickey (MASK) wearing kids would pack their local (CINEMAS) during the 1930’s to watch, laugh and (SING) along with their favorite (CARTOON) mouse and his pals.
  3. Both Walt (DISNEY) and Joshua (COWEN) were strong (PROMOTERS) of their respective brands, and it’s only natural that in 1934 the Disney organization (most likely Walt’s brother (ROY) who ran the business) worked with (LIONEL), the nation’s largest (TOY) manufacturer, to create a product tie-in.
  4. And so was born the No. 1100 (MICKEY) Mouse (HAND) Car, which Mr. Cowen often claimed “(SAVED) Lionel” from (BANKRUPTCY) during the Great (DEPRESSION).  Selling for (ONE) dollar, the little No. 1100 came equipped with an (IVES) (CLOCKWORK) motor and a circle of (TWO - RAIL) track.
  5. (UNCATALOGED) in 1934, Mickey and (MINNIE) continued to pump along until 1937.  They were joined along the way by the No. 1103 Peter (RABBIT) “(CHICK - MOBILE)”, the 1105 (SANTA - CLAUS) and (DONALD) Duck & (PLUTO) the Pup quacking along on the 1107.
  6. (WALT) Disney loved the (CIRCUS) and (TRAINS).  Perhaps Cowen was trying to woo more Disney business when in 1935 he submitted Lionel’s (PROPOSAL) for an elaborate display for a Mickey Mouse Circus set to the (DESIGN) Registration Bureau.  The demonstration set had a No. 1506 loco with Julius the (CAT) (from the Alice Comedies) riding the (TENDER) and Minnie holding a (FLAG) on the loco’s extended (PILOT) deck.
  7. Mickey acted as (FIREMAN)…er…mouse…on the production tenders of the 0-4-0 No. 1506 and the (VANDERBILT)-type 1508.  But other than (MECHANICAL) sets (Nos. 1532 & 1536), no Disney character would ride the Lionel Lines until the 1970’s.
  8. Why?  One word: (DISNEYLAND).  To quote (LIFE) magazine, “On December 8, 1947, Walt wrote a letter to his sister: ‘I bought myself a birthday-Christmas present-something I’ve wanted all my life-an (ELECTRIC) train!’”  After that moment all sources say (WALT) became “obsessed” with trains.  Clearly clockwork hadn’t impressed him, but (POSTWAR) Lionel accomplished what (KEY)-wind locos could not; (INSPIRE) him.
  9. During the 1950’s while Walt and his “(IMAGINEERS)” were busy inventing the (THEME - PARK), it was Louis (MARX) who dominated in making Disney themed (TOYS).  His No. 934 Mickey Mouse (METEOR) circa 1951, tiny plastic (DISNEYKINS) figures and numerous (ZIG - ZAG) type floor trains are well regarded by train, toy and Disneyana (COLLECTORS).
  10. It would be (GENERAL) Mills and (FUNDIMENSIONS) that would reintroduce “The (FAB) Five” to the Lionel Lines long after Josh, Walt and Roy were gone.
