I had 2 freight trains as a kid and always wanted a passenger set. This week I bought my 1st set of aluminum passenger cars (Williams, NYC) on ebay to make my 5th passenger consist. I dont have a permanent layout and when I set up the carpet central or Christmas layouts I rotate between freight and passenger (or 1 of each).

LOL, I sent in an upcoming Modern Era Notes column about this subject. I'm still primarily freight, but I realized I was knee deep in passenger cars.

I've been more enamoured with freight lately.  Probably because on a 4 by 6 foot oval freight cars, especially the shorter "scout" ones, make a train look longer.  A string of those starter-set/scout/plug-door boxcars can turn a 2018 2-6-4 into a giant locomotive!  Wink

I run more passenger than freight. I had 2 passenger sets running and one freight before I tore my layout down to redo it.

Nothing wrong with running passenger trains exclusively if that's what you like.  I can see the attraction, passenger trains can be a lot more spectacular, especially if you're running trains with the lights out and letting the layout provide the illumination.

Hey, remember, YOUR layout, YOUR rules!  Ain't no right or wrong!

On the two loops I've got I run one passenger, one freight.

I wish I had room for a 10'x12'!  Right now a 4x8 has to do.

This occurred to me today.  I find myself leaning more and more toward operating O gauge passenger trains on my layout.  Still enjoy running freight, especially doing yard switching.  But I am increasingly partial toward a long passenger set on the mainline.

I am interested in others thoughts on this.  FYI, my layout is a 10' by 12' PW style, tubular track (054 max curves), simple landscaping and traditional accessories.  I run mainly PW, MPC era and some modern Lionel and MTH PS-2.  A KW and a ZW power the whole thing, along with a Powermaster for TMCC ops.
