6464 BOXCARS
55 WORDS

BEWARE BACKWARDS ANSWERS

  1. Variations of these cars deal mostly with the number and placement of (RIVETS) and the number of (TACK) (BOARDS) on the car (DOORS).  This puzzle doesn’t go that far.  It uses their numerical (SUFFIXES) to tell them apart.  (Which is hard enough if you ask me.)
  2. The number (dash) one car was lettered for the (WESTERN) (PACIFIC) and was joined by the -25 (GREAT) (NORTHERN), -50 (MINNEAPOLIS) & (ST-LOUIS) and -75 (ROCK) (ISLAND) Route of the (ROCKETS) cars to launch the popular series in 1953.
  3. 1954 saw (SEVEN) additions.  The -100 W.P., -125 (NEW-YORK) (CENTRAL) (PACEMAKER), -150 (MISSOURI) Pacific (EAGLE), -175 R.I., -200 (PENNSYLVANIA), -225 (SOUTHERN) Pacific (ARROW) and the -250 W.P. with a blue (FEATHER) which was included in set No. 2223W.
  4. Only 2 new cars joined the line in 1955.  The -275 State of (MAINE) with its red, white & blue stripes and (BANGOR) & (AROOSTOOK) markings, and the -300 (RUTLAND), which could have a solid shield.
  5. The paint schemes got better in 1956 when Lionel added the -325 B&O (SENTINEL),  -350 Missouri-(KANSAS) - (TEXAS) “(KATY)”, -375 Central of (GEORGIA) with it’s ovoid logo, -400 (BALTIMORE) & (OHIO) with an orange comet and (TIME) (SAVER) (SERVICE) decal, -425 (NEW) (HAVEN) and the -450 G.N. in olive and orange with a “Rocky” the mountain (GOAT) decal.
  6. 1957 brought the blue -475 (BOSTON) & Maine, the yellow -500 (TIMKEN) (ROLLER) (FREIGHT), the (PASTEL) -510 and -515 of the Lady Lionel set, the red -525 M & St. L and the silver and yellow -650 (RIO) (GRANDE).
  7. There were no new cars added in 1958 and only one in 1959.  The -825 (ALASKA) Railroad car celebrated the admission of the 49th state with a jaunty (ESKIMO) logo to the left of the door.
  8. The series finished with the -900 NYC in 1960 and the -700 (SANTA-FE) in 1961.
  9. The sole uncataloged car of the type was the -1965 (TCA).
  10. (LIONEL’S) most (POPULAR) boxcar became the norm beyond 1970 and many have been (REISSUED).
