What you need is a conventional old-style AC transformer, the Williams line is strictly conventional control.

A current production Lionel will do the trick, say a CW-80, or an MTH Z-750 or Z-1000, or any good used AC transformer.  You'll need some leads to attach the transformer to the FasTrack, there should be tabs under the track where the leads will attach.  Lionel makes them too.

MAKE SURE the LionChief power pack is NOT plugged into the FasTrack when you're using the conventional transformer, they're not compatable.  By the same token, don't try to run the LionChief train with the conventional transformer, it won't work and you may damage it.

You'll like the Williams, I own several, they're good pullers and super-reliable.

Adding to Lionel kit
Posted by newtothis on Friday, December 25, 2020 6:02 PM

Hi all, apologies if this is a basic question but I recently got an older Williams locomotive for my son. He has a newer Lionel set (Pennsylvania Flyer LionChief) which he loves. Not knowing anything I assumed the new locomotive would be able to be controlled by the LionChief remote control but, of course, it cannot. So what do I need to be able to run this train? The Lionel Fastrack set has an outlet for accessories - can I get a controller that plugs into this? If so, what would you recommend that isn't overly complex or expensive?

Many thanks!
