LIONEL FOR 1950
62 WORDS

  1. (JOLTIN) Joe DiMaggio drew viewers to Lionel (CLUBHOUSE), a fifteen minute long show that ran on Saturday afternoons during Lionel’s (GOLDEN) (ANNIVERSARY) year.  The first episode featured MVP shortstop and Lionel enthusiast Phil “Scooter” (RIZZUTO).
  2. New in 1950 was the No. 2046 small (HUDSON) with a 2046W large (STREAMLINED) tender equipped with a (WHISTLE) and a water (SCOOP).
  3. Pulling set No. 1473WS, the 4-6-4 hauled a 3464 (OPERATING) boxcar, a 6520 (SEARCHLIGHT) car, a tank car and a caboose.
  4. Set No. 1464W introduced the new No. 2023 (ALCO) FA diesels in yellow and gray pulling three matching (UNION) Pacific passenger cars; the Nos. 2481 (PLAINFIELD), 2482 (WESTFIELD) & 2483. (LIVINGSTON).
  5. Assembled to compete with (MARX), set No. 1461S used a very unusual 2-4-2 (COLUMBIA) type locomotive with a draft (HOLE) for the smoke unit drilled in it’s boiler front.  Three cars from the “(SCOUT)” line filled out the set which included the X6004 (CURTISS) Candy car.
  6. Equipped with drivers made of compressed metal (POWDER), the No. 2035 2-5-4 (ADRIATIC) loco with smoke, whistle and (MAGNETRACTION) led set No. 1471WS.
  7. Included were the Nos. 3469X “(AUTOMATIC) (DUMP) Car”, 6465 (SUNOCO) tank car, 3461 Operating (LUMBER) Car, lighted 6357 caboose (WITHOUT) a smoke jack and a 6454 boxcar, all of which rode on (STAPLE)-end trucks.
  8. The new No. 6472 (REFRIGERATOR) car joined the Nos. 6555 (DELUXE) tank car, 6462 NYC (GONDOLA) with six (BARRELS) and the top-of-the-line 6457 SP-type caboose with battery boxes, (LADDERS) and a (DIE-CAST) smoke jack in set No. 2163WS, led by the No. 736 (BERKSHIRE) locomotive.
  9. Also doing freight duty in 1950 was the No. 2330 (GG-ONE) with two (MOTORS) leading set No. 2159W.
  10. The popular No. 681 (PENNSYLVANIA) RR 6-8-6 (TURBINE) pulled set No. 2173WS which included the updated No. 3472 (MILK) car with (PLASTIC) doors and a redesigned roof (HATCH).
  11. At the apex of the O gauge sets was the No. 2148WS.  Based on the prewar No. 763E (SEMI-SCALE) Hudson, the No. 773 used the same (HINGED) boiler front as the No. 736 and had a (MOVABLE) ornamental bell.
  12. 773’s produced in 1950 included (UNUSED) valve guides cast into the steam chest, a feature removed from the 1964 Hudsons.

  14. Not as glamorous as the No. 773 or even the Nos. 2343 and 2344 locomotives they were meant to operate with, were the (UNPOWERED) F-3 (B-UNITS); Nos. 2343C and 2344C joining the line in 1950.

  16. The other notable newcomer-to-be was to replace the prewar No. 313 (BASCULE) bridge.  However, the No. 213 “Real Railroad (LIFT) Bridge” wasn’t made until 2002, 52 years late.
  17. Originally produced with braided steel wire handrails, the No 456 Coal (RAMP) later used fishing line (probably made by Lionel’s (AIREX) division) in place of the wire.  Included was the No. 3456 (NORFOLK) & Western operating (HOPPER) car, which was also offered for separate sale.
