MAKE A WISH 1
51 WORDS

  1. Officially, they were the Sears (CHRISTMAS) Books, but their nickname was “(WISHBOOKS)”.  Between 1950 and 1969 (SEARS) (ROEBUCK) and Company advertised (LIONEL), (MARX) and other brands of toy trains.
  2. 1950 was the only year Sears showed the 275 watt (ZW-TRAINMASTER) transformer, the KW was featured more often.
  3. Lionel’s (UNION-PACIFIC) 2023 diesels pulled the same four (FREIGHT) cars as cataloged set 1467W that year, but that trend would soon change.
  4. “(HAPPI)-Time” trains were manufactured by Marx, but Sears advertised them as “Our Own (TRADE-MARK)” in 1950.  Perhaps the best locomotive sold under that brand name was the No. 21 (SANTA-FE) AA diesel which headed Sears set No. 79N05944 in 1951.
  5. Returning for one dollar (MORE) that year was the No. 79N05991 “Marx Train and Freight (STATION) Set.”  (SOUTHERN) Pacific diesels pulled the same three cars as they did in 1950, but the (DEPOT) Set went from (FIFTY)-two  pieces down to (FORTY)-three.
  6. Lionel’s No. 2173WS 6-8-6 (TURBINE) set with (MAGNETRACTION), Sears set No. 79N05985T, shot up (TEN) dollars in price in 1951.  However, it should be noted that Lionel had (REDUCED) the price of that outfit two years earlier. So the new price, which with Sears was (POSTPAID), wasn’t out of line too badly.
  7. For the same price as last year, $62.50, the 681 traded it’s 3472 (MILK) and 3469 Automatic (DUMP) cars for the 3461 (LOG) and 3656 (CATTLE) cars plus the 6464-75 (ROCK-ISLAND) boxcar and the new 53-6417 (PENNSYLVANIA) caboose for three cars in 1953.
  8. But the 682 would trade both of the operating cars for the new No. 3562-25 (BARREL) car, shown lettered for the (ERIE) Railroad behind the turbine or as a C&O car when paired with the 736 (BERKSHIRE), for the final appearances of both postwar steam stalwarts.
  9. 1955 saw the debut of the Marx/Happi-Time triple (SIX) steamer with it’s (PLOW)-like pilot.  The catalog called it the “Lowest-priced electric (SMOKE) train we have ever offered.”  (LOUIS) Marx said “They run better than they should for the price.”
  10. Also new for 55 was the No. 49NU9612 Six (UNIT) Diesel (SWITCHER) set pulled by Marx’ new No. 1998 (AT-AND-SF) locomotive.  Now Sears’ brand had a five car (WORK) train to compete with Lionel’s.
  11. The Freight Terminal and train set returned after a (THREE) year absence with (SIXTY) pieces.  Gone were the SP diesels as now the set was pulled by a (STEEL) 0-4-0 steamer with a (TENDER) lettered for (NEW-YORK-CENTRAL) and a new red and gray (PACEMAKER) caboose to match.
  12. 1955 would be the (    LAST) year for big Lionel (STEAM) locomotives in the Sears Christmas catalogs.  Led by the No. 2055 (HUDSON), set No. 79N09653 now used the correct illustration for the No. 3562-25 AT&SF car instead of the (PREPRODUCTION) renderings used in 1954.
