SPACE AND MILITARY 3
52 WORDS

  1. A fictional Super-O layout on the cover of Lionel’s (_ _ _ _ _ _ _) catalog for 1962 shows a (_ _ _ _ _ _ _) descending by parachute after being launched by a No. 3413. Crossing the path of the falling (_ _ _ _ _ _ _), are three (_ _ _ _ _) Missiles headed toward three red target (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) on this (_ _ _ _ _ _ _) family’s home railroad.
  2. Unfortunately, the near right angle curves depicted by the artist make this particular (_ _ _ _ _ _ _) unbuildable.  But Lionel did produce many (_ _ _ _ _ _ _) featuring space and (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) cars and (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) for vendors to purchase.
  3. For 1959 the display department enticed kids and model (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) alike by adding the No. 175 to their (_ _ _ _ _ - _) landscapes.  Perhaps more (TOY) than railroad item, the (_ . _ . _ _ _ _) Rocket Launcher was Lionel’s best (_ _ _ _ _) oriented accessory.
  4. They placed it front and center on the 5 by 9 foot D-264 and 8 by 8 foot D-265 Operating Displays but oddly placed it (_ _ _ _ _ _) circles and ovals of (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) track sections on later sales aids.
  5. Considered the (_ _ _ _ _) space or military accessory cataloged, the No. 197 Rotating (_ _ _ _ _) Antenna appeared as the “Radar (_ _ _ _ _ _ _) Tower” on depictions of layout D-191 in the 1957 advance catalog.  This was also the noisiest layout because it included the No. 465 “(_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) Station.”  Imagine that display at your Lionel (_ _ _ _ _ _ _)!
  6. Possibly the only Lionel accessory with a real-life military connection, the often overlooked No. 299 (_ _ _ _ - _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) Set was a component of the No. D-400, a 4 by 6 foot O-27 and HO island display  with a four (_ _ _ _) rack of shelves.
  7. With the (_ _ _ _ _) positioned on the opposite corner from the controls, Lionel enthusiasts could tap out (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) messages using a Lionel army surplus (_ _ _ _ _) code (_ _ _).  However, the No. 299 was not included in the $68 (_ _ _) price and was instead supposed to be taken from the dealer’s (_ _ _ _ _).
  8. You can’t talk about (_ _ _) and space toys without mentioning the king; Louis (_ _ _ _).  Be they (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) steel or (_ _ _ _ _) drab plastics, the locos and cars of the (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) stood ready to (_ _ _ _ _) any and all invaders!
  9. The Marxville Army had the Nos. 572ST (_ _ _ _), 572AA Anti-(_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) Gun, 572G (_ _ _ _ _) Gun and 572MG (_ _ _ _ _ _ _) Gun flatcars plus No. 552 gondolas loaded with wooden “(_ _ _ _ _ _)” and lettered “(_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) DEPT.”
  10. Later, the No. 666 2-4-2 (_ _ _ _ _) locomotive took over for the No. 500 (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) Pacific style semi-streamliner as the (_ _ _ _ _ _ _) started making (_ _ _ _ _ _) plastic sets.
  11. Crossing over to diesel was set No. 26750, the Cape (_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _) Express.  The (_ _ _ - _ _ _ _ _ - _ _ _ - _ _ _ _) No. 1798 Switcher pulled five 8-wheel cars, all of which were red, white and/or blue.
  12. There was the No. 1796 (_ _ _ _ _ _) Launcher, 1963 Rocket (_ _ _ _) Caboose and the unnumbered Missile Launcher and (_ _ _ _ _ _ _) along with the dangerous looking (_ _ _ _) Gondola and the (_ _ _ _ _ _) Light Generator car.  All of which looked fantastic when paired with a Marx (_ _ _ _) Canaveral playset!

Trains, trains, wonderful trains.  The more you get, the more you toot!  Big Smile
