Dougnotta - There's a story behind the turtle, annnnd, it's rail related. A couple years ago, it appeared on the rear vestible steps of one or our coaches. I was sweeping the steps after a trip, and left it set there in the corner of one of the stepwells, and went about my chores. 2 weeks later, after about a half-dozen more trips, I noticed it was still there. All righty, guess you're coming home with me. I temporarily placed it on the latout edge. Then the oldest grandson showed up. I told him the story of how it got there. He named it...Shelly.
I can see it just fine by clicking on "Everett" or "Train." Looks good!
Thanks for posting!

fife,
I've been thinking about your Mom and her love of birds, especially hummingbirds, since your post several weeks ago. With warming temperatures here we have begun to see quite a few of them. Look into getting this book for your mom: A Hummingbird in My House: The Story of Squeak by Arnette Heidcamp. I think she might enjoy it.

Buckeye, I've never been to Alaska but a good friend of mine's been up there twice for the fishing and loved it! He also rode the Alaska Railroad and met Sarah Palin when she was governor, she'd come out to meet the train and was handing out Alaska Railroad pins. Charlie got one from her and spoke to her for a bit, very nice lady he said. When he got home to New Jersey he sent her a Jersey Central pin and got a nice "thank you" note back.
Anyway, that's my Alaska story, for what it's worth!
Buckeye, I had always dreamt of driving the Al-Can Hiway, oh well maybe in my next life.
Dipping into history today. This is the SD3R modular layout that was in place for a relatively short time before we started construction of the current permanent layout.
Rendering of plans for SD3R's new layout, I guess instead of groundbreaking you would call this "initial wood cutting", 2001.
Last year my cousin lost her husband. She loves Alaska and wanted to go back this year. She asked us to go with her, however Covid-19 changed our plans and our trip was cancelled. Yesterday, if plans had been followed, we would have been flying home. Fortunately, we visited Alaska in 2015 with my cousin and her husband.
