Is this what you're thinking of?

The Lionel model is 8100, made in 1981.

Lionel made a scale version with matching cars(I think) about 3 years ago, but it's extremely difficult to find. I also think that MTH recently released a full scale version, but I'm not so sure about the matching passenger cars.

Williams makes a semi-scale version, the same size as the traditional Lionel one, and should have plenty of different matching passenger cars.

I also believe that MTH makes both a passenger and freight set in their starter set line.

Rainbow Titan.....well, I did some rummaging. Couldn't find anything with that combination but there have been a number of name trains over the years with names that are close:

The Rainbow - American Flyer Clockwork set from 1928-30
The Statesman - American Flyer train set

The Diplomat - B&O
The Aristocrat - CB&Q
The Olympian
The Gilt Edge - New Haven
The Sunrise Special - Long Island
The Sunshine Special - MoPac
The Sunshine
The Ambassador - B&M as well as American Flyer Trains set

By the way - more than one author has used the phrase "the rainbow hued Olympian" to describe the color scheme of that train. Since Olympian and Titan are synonyms perhaps this might be the source of your memory of Rainbow Titan.
