My first observation is that I can hear the reverser cycling, but no headlight. Either the lamp is burned out, or I have an "open". Prepare to make continuity checks across the drum and fingers, but stopped to clean the drum first. Now my headlight works, but she only ran briefly forward and reverse and then stopped.
Fortunately, I've been here before ! In fact, this is the 3rd time in the 5 years I've owned this engine, and I know exactly where to look !
Yep, just like last time ( and the time before that).
The brush is stuck inside the brush tube on the brush plate. All she needs is a good cleaning !!!
As Jimmy Durante would say:

Also had same scenario with brushes on 224e. It has a similar brush tube setup.
Back to rollin' the freight!!

This 290 has been a great engine. It was working when I bought it, and for most of the 6 years that I've owned it. But, it has suddenly stopped working on 3 occasions,and each time it's been the brush problem. At least I know what to look for ! Given it's from the '49 to '51 time frame, I guess that's reasonable!!
