Lionel 5132 Switches
Posted by mgbbob on Monday, January 27, 2020 12:21 PM

Hi know there is a ton of stuff already out there but I can't seem to find my poblems.

1. The first switch was runninng slow in one direction.  I pulled it apart and found the small red wire under the stamped metal plate to the rear was crispy crittered.  I replaced the wire and cleaned everything up and the switch is working but in one direction is sometimes bounces and doesn't stay completely open.  Any ideas?

2.  My other switch will not work unless I apply voltage at at the soleniods.  If you look at the solendiod motor from the side there are four rivets.  I can activate the motor by using fixed voltage for one connection and tapping the far left and the far right rivets to alternate the switch movement.  I can get nothing up at the top to work.  Any ideas?

I probably should have mentioned that I have the motor assembly disconnected so I am only dealing with that part.

Here is the parts view of the postwar 022 switch, which is the predesessor of the 5132 switch.

Make sure all the wiring to the motor is intact, and there are no bad solder joints on the coil assembly. Make sure the binding posts are connected solidly to the coil wires.

Next, insure the moving contact plate is making full contact with the stationary contact plate, and that the contact points are clean and not pitted.

The problem is the diagram doesn't show the wiring underneath.  I finally kept looking at this thing and realized that when I replaced the red wire that loops around and connects two sections of track I connected to the wrong rail.  I move the wire to connect the same two rails and all is working well.  I pulled another switch appart and that same wire is burnt up on that switch.  Two for two once I concentrated enough to figure out what should be happening.
