Well!  No so long ago we were talking about "New Old Stock" and "Mint In Box?"

Well, I lucked into the same at the "World's Greatest Hobby On Tour" show today.

(Check the "Survey" topic for a report on the show.)

Anyway, I found one of these...

http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/lionel-18052-pennsylvania-238e-4-134048622

Yep, the 1997 issue of the "Pennsy Torpedo," NIB, and at a good price too!

One I can "conventional" to my heart's content!  Woo-hoo!

Gents, let me tell you something...

I was up in New Jersey visiting when Superstorm Sandy hit and knocked out the power in New York City and environs.  24 hours later when some of the local papers were able to get editions out they were filled with photos of people absolutely frantic to find places to charge their smart phones.  Their phones were dying and they were in a panic.  They couldn't function without them!

Not for me!  Some times I'm glad I'm a dinosaur and immune to the latest electro-fads.

When the things you own begin to own you  it's time to step back and take a good long look at yourself.

Doug and Flintlock,
Like the old song, “Stuck in the middle with you” Only phone based. They want you to have a smart phone so they can watch and follow your every move. I love my flip phone and have text turned off. I would rather hear your voice and get the issue resolved with my mouth. Yet I would be just fine with a land line… So soon we wil all be stuck in the middle.
The kids keep telling me I have to have a smart phone, but I have yet to see what is so smart about having one unless you are the one getting all the money, they produce for others than you. I tell them to get me one and that don’t happen,,,.

Kevin, I made that same mistake initially, the BetterHalf got a real good 2 for 1 buy on QVC for a couple of Amazon kindles. They were dirt cheap but I found out when trying to load the Lionel and MTH apps it didn't work. It seems that Amazon software is android based but just enuff to be functional for the Amazon apps & store but not fully loaded android to use android based apps. Bang Head

Flintlock, I agree on the cell phones. Smart phone = don't want, don't need. I just have an antique flip phone for any kind of emergency while going to or from the museum.  Never know when my CHF will act up. If they ever discontinue my plan I will be S.O.L.

I had a smart phone.  It was company-issued as I needed it to do the job.  When I retired I turned it in.  I don't miss it at all.

I have a flip-phone now.  I just use it for phone calls.  That's good enough.

Kevin, For the one LC+ that I have, as well as for use at the museum, I picked up a cheap android based RCA tablet. If memory is correct it was only like $35 on sale at WallyWorld. The app from Lionel is free.

Thanks Doug I may try that. Our daughter gave us her old tablet but it will not download the app? I guess you have to have a certain style?

I want the kids to get me a smart phone but I may be dead before that happens. Dead Laugh

Peter, I don't know what Lionel's thinking.

In fact, I was at a train show yesterday and the topic of the Lionel 2020 catalog came up.  General consensus among the crew was no-one  has any idea what Lionel's thinking.

I'm heading to a "Worlds Greatest Hobby On Tour" trainshow next weekend.  Lionel's going to be an exhibitor there, and I'm tempted to burn their ears over the 2020 product line, but I probably won't.  I'm too nice a guy.  I don't like to hurt people's feelings.

Why produce a model of an SP 4-8-4 in Chessie Steam Special colours but not the correct Reading T-1 although it is being produced concurrently...

Would a "fantasy" paint scheme sell better than an accurate prototype scheme?

Is there something I'm missing here?

Yes Dave I saw those. For me it is just they have nothing offered in modern Diesel power in LionChief plus 2.0. I have plenty of F3s and steam power as it is. I should of made that clear.

For the comments relating to no LionChief 2.0, are you all just focusing on the Starter sets? (if so, I guess that is correct).

There are LionChief 2.0 engines on pages 90-93 though, the Allegheny and the F3s are all marked as new.  I guess the Berks and the 0-6-0Ts are all previously offered since none are annoltated as new.

I agree it's not a lot, but it's something.  To me it's particularly frustrating that they did the Polar Express Disconnect set with a LionChief (not Plus, 2.0, etc) when all the stand alone offerings of the exact same engine are LionChief Plus 2.0.

Well after waiting 16 months and 16 days for my last Lionel order last year, from the year before.  I Took,,, The jump and decided for this as my once a year train buy seeing as they have no Modern LionChief plus 2.0 offers in this years catalog. Now I just need a smart phone to run it??? Maybe I will get it by next year...

Conrail blue and steam just don't go together very gracefully.  But I do like the Chessie GS.  If I had the money though, and the radii, I'd go after the preamble set on pg. 62.  Look carefully at the O gauge pages from the high 80's on and you'll see the LionChief locos.  Although most descriptions mention the "LionChief App." rather than a special remote.

The Conrail T-1 4-8-4 steam locomotive goes too far...

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of "fantasy" paint schemes either, but that doesn't mean others aren't.

I'm not interested in western 'roads either, although I might make an exception for a used Big Boy at a decent price, or one of those Union Pacific "49er" streamlined Pacifics, you know, the ones that look like a brown and yellow slug?  If I saw one of those used at a decent price I'd probably grab it.  It's so ugly it's a classic!

Talk about milking the GS cow dry......doesn't look like anything I'm interested this go around.....but then again, I'm not interested in any western railroads any how.

May have to visit my K4s and contribute to the layaway fund......

Come to think of it, I didn't see anything  shown as "LionChief-Plus," unless I missed it.

I did not either but then again the ones they had in last years offers still have not arrived as said they would in December and now show June,,maybe? Laugh SO if they skip a year maybe they can deliver on time. Wink

"Mint In Box!"  Arghhh, I should have thought of that!   Bang Head

Usually if I think of "mint in box" the first thing that comes to mind is something from Russell Stover or "Junior Mints."  Maybe "Peppermint Patties."

Well like I said, the learning never stops.  The day you stop learning you might as well be dead!

NOS?

Um, I hate to admit it but I'm kind of drawing a blank on that.  What does NOS mean?  Maybe when I find out I'll bang my head on a wall and say "WHY didn't I think of that?"

Wouldn't be the first time...
