Those are the kind of finds I like, simple, have meaning to the finder, and bring you happiness...a good day..

If it works out the way it usually works for me, you won't find it, it'll find YOU!

Probably when and where you least expect it.

Yes, this happened with the elusive( at least to me ) 2035. I kept missing the boat !

But, then one, and shortly after, another crossed my path, and I bought them both !

It'll happen one day !

I've found several good deals at the antique shops. But then there are those that think just because it's an old electric train it's golden

I'll tell you, if there's an antique shop or mall in your area, or even a thrift shop or two, and you've got the time, it never hurts to stop in and look around.  You never know.  And never say "Oh, that place never has anything!" 'cause guess what's going to happen?

Personal experience.  I was at an antique show/flea market several years ago and found a K-Line Hershey's 100th Anniversary train set, complete, for $85!  It comes out once a year for a run under the Christmas tree.  My best find yet.  It's this one...

My second-best is another story for another time.

I'm looking for a 2035 "Blockbuster" myself, no luck yet, but I'm patient.

I've mentioned this one before:  My best find is a 1950 773--for $50, which happens to be the original 1950 sale price.

I just have to ask, was it the original price tag?

I didn't think so!  Laugh

And I hope that 773 worked out a lot better for you than that monster 783 arkady had to deal with, you know, the one he mentioned in the 783 thread?

I usually find the prices at these antique stores are all across the board. I bought my last 2035 at this store for $95, and it was clean, and sharp. They also had a beat up scout for about the same price !

This is because many of these antique shops have many different vendors selling in different parts of the store. They may each have a space in the store, with varying prices.

This last time I saw much more American Flyer, and less Lionel than I would normally see. I saw a 290 at a reasonable price, $65, but it was less pristine than the one I already have. But, I bought the cars !

Oh yes.  My favorite one, second tyme around, is a consignment shop.  Somebody had a Marx clockwork set in their section for $50.  Granted, it wasn't in like new condition, or good condition or even had wheels!  Wink

Trains, trains, wonderful trains.  The more you get, the more you toot!  Big Smile

Thank you !

I shall research this further.. I looked at the pictures. I am missing 75% of this lift bridge. I guess my options are to find a complete bridge, or try to build something out of this. Thank You again for pointing me in the right direction !

It happened to me, too:

I got excited when I found a clock work engine at one of the antique shops, until I realized it only had 3 wheels ! BE CAREFUL!!

But, I will say another shop had the most beautiful Lionel 681, in fantastic condition, original boxes, in the display case. But, $350 for the engine, $150 for the tender, which was a "Lionel Lines" 8 wheel tender. I could not get past $500 for the pair.

Did not stop me from going back to take another look...

but, it was gone !

Don't feel bad at the miss.  I got a 681 at Henning's Trains in Lansdale PA November of 2018 for $185.  I wasn't looking for a 681 but it was too good to pass up. Great shape and innards tuned up, but no box.  So what.  It's a great runner!

Keep looking, there's others out there.

You're welcome!

I have long toyed with the idea of getting one myself.

They come up on that auction site frequently in various states of repair and completeness.  I'd keep an eye on the listings for pieces and incomplete units.  You should be able to piece one together without having to buy the whoe outfit if you can afford to be patient.
