LionChief Hogwarts Express coaches question
Posted by Benjamin Maggi on Monday, December 30, 2019 10:23 AM

I have the original 2007 Hogwarts Express (#7-11020) set from about 10 years ago. When it was originally released, there were two extra coach options for it:

#7-11142: Express "Add on 2-pack" (which contained two coaches, including what we might call a "combine" in the USA), and

#6-35229: Hogwarts "Dementors" coach.

I haven't acquired either of the above yet but plan to some day. I see that Lionel has now rereleased the Hogwarts Express in 2015 and also rereleased the Dementors coach with the same number (#6-35229).

Question #1: are they the same coach, and are they interchangable? Meaning, does a LionChief coach work on a layout powered by a standard Lionel transformer?

Also, Lionel released in 2018 a standalone coach (only one this time, and not the different combine but instead just a regular coach). Boo, as I want that combine! This is numbered #6-85264.

Question #2: without car numbers to compare, is this just the same coach as in the previous 2-car set?

Question #3: did Lionel announce why they aren't rereleasing the combine car? I would think more people would want a different style coach body in their trains.

Thanks!

To answer your question about the Dementors coaches. Two were made. A previous model that flickered and had no sound, and a later version that came out a few years ago that has improved lighting, window images, and sound.  They both can be used with any operating system as they are independent of any transformers or remotes. There is a switch on the bottom to turn the cars on and off manually.

Thanks! I didn't realize there was a difference, but the one with sound is the one that I want.

Good choice !   I have it, and the sounds and lighting effects are great.
