583A Crane by Lionel won't rotate
Posted by sd45gp30 on Sunday, November 10, 2019 5:01 PM

I bought a used 2004 lionel version of the 583A. Hooked up per instructions.  Red and green buttons both seem to activate the motor and positively do make the magnet work.  However,  the motor just buzzes and the cab won't rotate. I'm putting 16v to it and don't see any obvious obstructions. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I do not own a 583a but worked on one some time back. This accessory uses a double wound motor. The red button rotates the motor one way and the green button reverses the direction. The magnet is energized by either button and remains energized until either button is released.

The fact that the magnet appears to operate properly and you hear buzzing coming from the motor makes me feel the wiring is correct. Perhaps the commutator plates and brushes need to be cleaned and the armature shaft lubricated.

I have attached a link to a posting at MTF for your review.

Thanks for the link to that post Swede, I will take a look this evening.  Also will check if it needs some basic cleaning.  Much appreciated!

Found the issue! Broken rubber pulley belt in the gear box assembly.  Now to find a replacement. Hopefully the local hobby store that carries a lot of RC and robotics items. Thanks!

If you have a Ace Hardware near by you might find a O-Ring that would work.
