wiring 2 loop layout with crossovers

how do I wire an american flyer 2 loop layout that has switches to join both loops.  I tried fiber pins at the switch location, but the engine stopped at the switch.  I removed the fiber pins and the engine ran over the switch to the inner loop, but the transformer overheated.  Both loops are powered.  tom

How many rails (2 or 3)?  How many transformers?  How are the track and the transformer(s) connected?  Is there any way to reverse a train (reversing loop, wye, etc.)?

2 rails, 1 transformer with 2 controls.  Transformers are wired to the rail between the slot in the rail.  I received an answer from someone who told me to push the button forward on the switch to 2 train operation and that solved my problem.  Thanks so much for replying.. tom paul
