Marx 1960s Electric set ID?
Posted by Leverettrailfan on Sunday, September 22, 2019 4:39 PM

Hey all, been a while since I've been active on the CTT forums, but I have a curio that I'd appreciate a little information on if anyone knows it! I recently was kindly offered a collection of trains. They were described as "Lionel trains, from the 1940s", but in fact there seems to (unsurprisingly) have been a little more to things than that. I've been going through the boxes one by one, as I've been clearing space for the trains to go, and the most recent box held a rather interesting and amusing surprise. Inside the box, was a Marx train set. Well, no, two marx sets. But only one set. I mean to say... I've just had twins! inside the box, was a matching pair of Marx sets. Each set had an identical 490 0-4-0 with mechanical chugging sound (achieved by a thin strip of brass hitting a thin metal plate every time the left side rod fully enters the cylinder), a Black 4-wheel plastic New York Central tender, a green plastic NYC "Pacemaker" 4 wheel boxcar numbered 174479, a blue plastic NYC 4 wheel gondola, numbered 715100, an orange plastic  NYC "Pacemaker" 4 wheel caboose with no number, and a Black & White litho No. 1209 50 watt transformer. All the cars are the type with simulated truck frames molded into the carbodies, and solid plastic knuckle couplers. The track was not in the box with them, so I don't know what quantity of track was sold with them.

I'm dying to know what the set number for them is, and what the set contents were listed as. I'm going to get in touch more with their former owner to see if he knows the story behind the matching sets. If anyone here knows the set number & contents, I'd love to hear all about it!!
Best Regards,
E.
