Those Canadian Alco  FA's have been the symbol of the Napa Valley Wine Train since the beginning. I was hoping to see them run, but they were all parked. Not sure what their future is...

Our train was pulled by the GP38-2.

rode behind 587 and 765 out of Chicago in '93. Got a souvenir cinder in the eye, but that didn't bother me at all-  having too much fun !

Wow, the ms and I rode the Napa Valley Wine Train back in the early years (late 80's?/early 90's?) and the Alcos were pristine as were the matching coaches. Those photos are pretty sad looking and who came up with the yellow scheme? ugh...

At that time all the farmers and vineyards were mad as all get-out as many had built their own dirt crossings over the long unused ROW. When NVWT reactivated the line this required the land owners to pay for their own 'compliant' grade crossings or not cross the tracks anymore. There were all kinds of protest signs along the ROW with hate signs for the NVWT. One vineyard had a flatbed truck parked with a big sign on the bed that had 'NVWT' wih the classic red circle and slash over the name.

Yes, I've heard those stories, but 35 years later, I see no signs of any bad feelings between the Napa Railway, and the vintners. The Alco's aren't running, but then again, it's 35 years later. Do we keep our cars that long ?

I will say we had a wonderful time up there. The food and service on the train are excellent! As is all of Yountvlle, where we stayed.

I was actually referring to " Vintage Diesels " , but I'll take credit for that little bit of wit...
