There is nothing to gain by removing the shell / boiler casting from the mechanism for lubrication. Everything is accessible while assembled.
If you do remove the shell, take care not to pinch the SOS wire putting it back together.

The engine is an easy open, 3 screws I believe. Oil both ends of the armature shaft and open the tender and check the foam pad. If the board touches the tender frame it will probably short it out. The foam pad is usually bad.

This service manual, page 3-31 has an exploded view of the locomotive, which should help inj your disassembly.

Just purchased a mint in original carton a 1978 Die-Cast 4-6-4 engine with Magne-Traction and tender with Sound of Steam plus 7 passenger cars. I have lubricated all the visable engine gears, however I do not have any service info on the #8600-100 motor and how to remove it from the engine.
I would appreciate it if someone could make this info availabe or steer me in the right direction.
Thanks
