Thanks a bunch Wayne, for these memories. I used to ride the train to work for two or three years so I passed a lot of these stations. You also mentioned Montvale, since my wife grew up there we got our marriage license in Montvale at the clerks office in the old train station. Thanks again for a great thread. Wayne

Those old depots are architectural masterpieces !

 Love 'em !

And old depots like these, even when repurposed will always look like a train station. Just as old Taco Bell's, and IHOP's that have been repurposed will always look like a Taco Bell, or IHOP.

But these old lady's have class !

 

One book that I enjoy flipping through is " Alcos to Allentown". It is about railroads in north eastern Pennsylvania, and has many depots pictured of probably the same age.

1870's or so. Great era for depots and architecture !

Glad you liked it Paul!  Just a bit of history before I go further...

The Hillsdale station is on today's New Jersey Transit Pascack Valley line,  but originally it was the old New Jersey and New York Railroad dating from 1859.  It eventually passed into the hands of the Erie in the late 19th Century.

For a tour of the line as it is now, click on the following link.  The tour starts in River Edge  (all the stations south of same don't exist anymore) and goes north.  Click on the next town (arrow points up) in the black box top of the screen to continue.  With the possible exception of Montvale I don't think any of the stations are less than 100 years old.
