I also have the 2026. Mine is the early version from '48-'49. A really smooth and quiet engine ! I was lucky with mine in that I have never had to open it up ! Only replaced the light bulb. Smoke unit belches smoke rings !
You are lucky that your motor runs, and so I would have to agree with ACDX Rob that it is most likely a wiring issue.
You mentioned rebuilding the E-unit. Does that mean new drum and fingers ? If so, double check the wiring with Rob's diagram.
The other option would be to run without the E-unit in forward only, for now. And come back and revisit the wiring at a later date.
Sometimes if you walk away from a problem, when you come back fresh it is immediately obvious !

Let me take a moment to clarify my reply to this question and others. The questions asked on our Forum are excellent, meaningful, and useful to many readers of CTT. All the same, I am aware that many readers of the magazine do not participate on the Forum. They therefore miss the questions raised and the answers provided.
To help those readers and to expand our Questions and Answers column in every issue, I have been reaching out to people on our Forum. To be specific, I reached out in some instances to the person raising the question and asked that he or she contact me via telephone.
When that happens, I ask the person if he or she would like to submit the original question (and any more information he or she would like to add) to our Questions and Answers column for Joseph Mania to answer. For that to happen, I need the person's name, city, and state--information missing from our Forum entries.
Sometimes people asking questions do contact me. Sometimes they do not. When they do, I ask for any additional information necessary and then email the question to Joe Mania.
That is the end of it. I am not being critical of anyone who replies to a question on our Forum. To the contrary, I have the utmost respect for people asking questions and people taking the time to share their expertise and experience to provide answers.
I hope this clarifies my intention and assures participants on the Forum about my words. Together, we continue to make the hobby more enjoyable and meaningful.

I don't get the impression that anyone's trying to diss anyone here, but I see the point. If a solution's been found it should be posted here for all to see.
However, it can come from the original poster, you know?

At any rate, I'm sure some of you who've made good suggestions to a poster with a problem have gotten a little miffed when you've never heard anything back, haven't you?

I like that they want to help but why diss the rest of the people that are running trains and fixing issues and most of all taking the time to try to help others??
Why bother with it when they post that call me the expert! What a joke! Yes the reply should be out here and you should not have to pay for a fix it stupid book two years from now.

KRM Seem to notice lately that Roger takes it on himself to tell posters to contact him for “EXPERT ADVICE” "contact me" What???? So the rest of us are stupid????? Sure some here,, have forgot more than Roger will ever know!!! So I guess the rest of us are dumb or he is worried he will be the next to get the CTT AX. WTH? No need to reply to any questions on the fourm then is there???? That should help everything on this forum and new people looking for real help! BTW I wonder who his Expert is???
Kevin this has been brought up before, and Rogers response is that he does this so the Questions & answer editor can have some material to print, but it also has been said what 6 years from now we will see your sugestions on how to fix the problem.
We feel if it is asked in here, it should be completely responded in here. So If I have the same problem I don't have to ask the same question to be told to call me. ( roger )

It sounds like something witht he E-unit may be shorting, as it is only when you add the e-unit to the engine. could you be missing a wire from the E-Unit so the engine isn't getting the correct signal?
It's wired incorrectly. The field and armature(via brushes) need to be connected in series.

I have been working on a #2026 to get it operating again. I have rebuilt the e-unit and it works well on its own when jumpered from the transformer. The drum turns perfectly. The motor works well when hot wired with or without the e-unit screwed to the frame and not wired to the motor. I have looked over the motor from top to bottom and it looks good. Pick-ups, brushes, armature, etc all look good. The motor and e-unit roll ok when pushed by hand on a hard table top. But when I solder the wires from the e-unit to the motor the motor acts as if it wants to run but does not. The transformer does not show an electrical short. The motor will buzz in all e-unit lever positions and the wheels act like they want to turn but they do not. I'm ready to give up on this engine and use it as a paper weight. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve
